1. Erect an operating shelter and ensure that the operator has a clear view of the signalman and the load being dragged or hoisted. Structures, scaffolding, and materials or components stacked on-site during construction must not obstruct the operator's view of the entire operation within the working area. If the shelter is located within a hazardous work zone, its roof must meet the requirements for protective shelters.
2. Ensure a solid foundation. The winch should be positioned as far as possible from hazardous work zones on elevated, firm ground; it must be securely anchored using steel cables attached to buried ground anchors, and piles should be driven in front of the unit to prevent shifting or overturning.
3. Align the drum. The center of the drum must be aligned with the guide pulley. The distance from the drum to the first guide pulley must comply with regulations: it should be greater than 15 times the drum width for grooved drums and greater than 20 times for smooth drums. This prevents the steel cable from overlapping or tangling during operation and minimizes friction between the cable and the guide pulley flanges.
